“When you make something, when you improve something, when you deliver something, when you add some new things or services to the lives of strangers, making them happier or healthier, or safer or better and when you do it all crispier, efficiently and smartly, the way everything should be done but so seldom is you are participating more fully in the whole grand human drama.
More than simply alive, you are helping others to live more fully, and if that’s business, all right call me a businessman” – PHIL KNIGHT

Recently I completed reading ‘Shoe Dog’ a memoir of Nike co-founder Phil Knight. What an inspirational journey that portrays the early wrestling days of Nike. As we plug into this ride, we realize that it is a rollercoaster. There is love, betrayal, friendship, success, fall, confusion, negotiation, settlement and death. The book builds an easy connection with its intense storytelling style. Allows the readers to become a part of it.

Many times I get astonished with the fact that despite all the hurdles, the brand didn’t stop running. They laced up and finished the success mark like a determined runner in the track. A sense of keep going is what I learned from this fascinating memoir.
As we go through this ride, roadblocks are continuously popping out, making the track hard for Nike to run. Being an amateur in the field he was beating around the Bonsai Tree. There were many people in his life who greeted his passion and intensity with laboured sighs and vacant stares. He always wanted to walk on the track and test the pitch before running for a big race. But he never stopped believing what he was doing. His sensible and ‘keep going’ mind lead the company to a huge success.

In his words, “It was my first real awareness that not everyone in this world will like us, or accept us, that we’re often cast aside at the very moment we most need to be included”.

Beginning his career as a world wanderer, ‘LUCK’ played a very significant role in Phil’s life. Money wasn’t the sole reason behind the birth of Blue Ribbon (Nike’s initial name) in the year 1964. A hardworking track athlete graduate of the University of Oregon, he wanted to sell shoes in America with his coach Bill Bowerman co-founder of Nike. His preservation and bold business strategies fulfilled this vision into a running reality. He made America wear his shoes later the whole world donned Nike, embraced the brand as their favourite sports brand.
There were the goals that he was taught to aspire to, and part of him did aspire to them, instinctively. Those goals had indeed followed ‘Nike’- The Goddess of Victory to become the real champion on the ground. In Greek mythology, ‘Nike’ she is also rewarded as the dealmakers. In the Oresteia she says; “I admire …the eyes of persuasion ” who is considered as the patron saint of negotiation.

One of the personal traits of Phil knight is that despite being an introvert he showed the world that life situations can pull the best out of you, it can make a non- negotiator win a first-class business. It can also make a lazy fool to climb Fuji Mountain twice. There were so many moments where his business could have fallen apart due to factors beyond his control. But he managed to tackle everything with his quick decisionmaking and smart leadership skills.
As he quotes ” Running tracks gives you fierce respect for numbers because you are what number say you are, nothing more, nothing less. No one cares about what made you post a bad time in a race.
Your Numbers, in the end, we’re all that anyone would remember. I had lived this reality, and some artist made me realize this”
The book will leave you in a contemplative state to rose and position Phil Knight in the title of a ‘Shoe Dog’. As he describes in the book, Shoe dogs were people who devoted themselves wholly to the making, selling, buying or designing of shoes. Shoes were their way of connecting with humanity with the world.

The memoir describes a passionate journey of how an amateur, introvert non- negotiator, an ordinary track athlete turned out to be the father of the world’s top-notch sports brand.
